Veterinary science is a medical profession that practices prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases in animals. A veterinarian is responsible  for health and welfare of the animals, both domestic and wild animals. These animals include pets, zoo animals, livestock, laboratory, and sporting animals. It also includes the breeding and scientific handling of livestock.

  • Veterinarians are employed to prevent and control any kind of disease found in animals
  • Veterinarians that are hired by pharmaceutical companies are mainly involved in the development and research of many animal-based products that are used in animal care.
  • The Banking and the insurance sector requires veterinarians for passing loans for livestock and poultry farms.

Job Profile

  • A veterinarian working with small animals, for example dogs, cats, birds, and reptiles, in clinical practice will:
    • diagnose animal health problems;
    • vaccinate against diseases, such as distemper and rabies;
    • medicate animals suffering from infections or illnesses;
    • treat and dress wounds;
    • set fractures;
    • perform surgery;
    • advise owners about animal feeding, behavior, and breeding;
    • euthanize animals when necessary;
  • A veterinarian working with large animals, primarily horses and cows, will:
    • provide preventive care to maintain the health of food animals;
    • test for and vaccinate against diseases;
    • consult with farm or ranch owners and managers on animal production, feeding, and housing issues;
    • treat and dress wounds, set fractures, and perform surgery;

  • Read the signs from the animal’s behavior and diagnose the ailment

Current Job Scenario

  • In India, an average vet makes anything between Rs.10,000 to Rs.80,000 per month.
  •  In private practice, one can earn about Rs. 100 to Rs. 600 per patient, which also depends on the treatment method that the animal is required to be given.

Academic Eligibility 10+2 with biology, chemistry and physics and he/she also needs to qualify the entrance test conducted by the concerned universities  Bachelor’s degree in veterinary science and must qualify the All India Entrance Examination conducted by the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR).
