Telecom Jobs poised to grow

India is the second largest wireless network in the world, with a teledensity of 77%. Currently, there are over 900 million mobile subscribers. Of the many new technologies in the telecom arena, 4GLTE (long-term evolution) represents the present and the future.

What Is a Habit? A habit is a learned behavior that a person repeats so often that he or she begins to do it without even thinking about it. Certain habits can be helpful, like the habit of brushing your teeth before going to bed or buckling your seat-belt when you get into a car. These are habits that a person builds on purpose, to achieve a positive objective.

Repetitive behavior is imprinted on neural networks regardless of whether this action is benefiting you or hurting you. This means that if you engage in a negative behavior often enough, it is going to become a bad habit. It all happens unconsciously, and it takes as little as 21 days for repetitive behavior to become habitual. Picking up a bad habit is easy, but overcoming it can be far more of a challenge. One of the problems with habits is that it can sometimes be difficult to decide if they are working for us or against us.

If a bad habit is preventing you from getting ahead in your career, you are going to be able to take action to overcome this behavior. Making this type of change isn’t always easy, but you can once you have the right motivation. The problem with habits that appear harmless is that they can be damaging your reputation without you even realizing it.

1. Complaining About Your Job

If you have had a stressful day at the office, it is understandable that you are going to want to let off some steam. It’s human nature to occasionally complain about having an ungrateful boss or incompetent colleagues. The danger is that if this venting is witnessed by the wrong person, it could harm your reputation or even put your career in jeopardy.

One thing you definitely want to avoid doing is complaining about your boss or company on social media. You can never really be sure who is going to be reading your comments, and it looks unprofessional anyway. If news gets around that you are harming the reputation of the company, it’s not going to make you popular in the office – at least not with people who could help your career.

2. Being Negative All the Time

Don’t be that person in the office who is like a volcano of doom and gloom. This behavior can feel harmless if you believe you are just telling it like it is, but too much negativity can make you hard to be around. It may even mean that your boss begins to view you as a bit of a liability – it only takes one negative person on a team to lower the overall motivation.

The other danger with such negativity is that it be incredibly disempowering, and it can use up a lot of your energy and focus.

Many of us have become so habituated to social media that we can end up checking the latest updates on Facebook or Twitter automatically when we go online. This can become a huge distraction if you work using a computer connected to the internet.

It isn’t only that doing this is a waste of work time, but it can also take a few minutes to regain your focus after this type of distraction. This can mean that your productivity suffers, and this can put your career in jeopardy.

4. Always Speaking Your Mind

There is a difference between behaving honestly and using the truth as a weapon to hurt people or cause trouble. In a work environment it is vital to always think of the possible consequences before speaking your mind.

Saying the wrong thing, even if you believe you are being honest, can hurt people’s feelings and cause a bad atmosphere in the office. Sometimes it is going to be necessary for you to provide criticism, but it is best to use this sparingly, unless you want to develop a reputation as someone who is hard to work with.

Telling funny stories, playing pranks, and acting the clown can make you popular in the office, but it can also destroy your reputation. It means that nobody is going to take you seriously and you may begin to be viewed as unsuitable for promotion. Self-handicapping becomes a habit because it can help to protect your self-esteem. If you believe that you tried your best but failed, it is going to be a bit of a blow to your ego. The advantage of self-handicapping is that it gives you an excuse for the failure. The problem is that it means you are never going to be able to give 100 per cent to anything, so you are only likely to achieve mediocre results in life. These days’, being good at your job isn’t enough in many industries – you need to be great at it, but this can’t happen if you are self-handicapping.

7. Underselling Yourself

A bit of modesty can be an attractive personality trait, but it can become a liability if it prevents you from promoting yourself at work. It is unrealistic to expect managers to always be able to spot your hidden potential. There is also the likelihood that unless you speak up, many of your career successes is going to go unnoticed.

You don’t want to turn into some type of ego-manic, but you also have to be careful of underselling yourself. The trick is to develop a good understanding of your own strengths and weaknesses – this requires complete honesty and the ability to be objective about yourself. If you feel that there is a project where you could perform well, or that you are ready for a promotion, you need to sell your suitability to those in charge.

8. Exaggerating Problems

You’ve no doubt heard the cautionary tale about the boy who called “wolf” too many times. Exaggerating problems can seem like a harmless tactic to get other people’s attention, but it can actually damage your career.

It may mean that you develop a reputation for being a bit of a ‘drama queen’, and when you identity real problems, other people won’t take you seriously. There is never any real need to exaggerate problems – things are either serious or they aren’t.

1 Am I willing to make sacrifices to run a business?

Owning and running a business takes a tremendous amount of work and effort. You must be willing to sacrifice time spent on personal pursuits, recreation and relaxation—at least for awhile.

You’ll experience some rough patches with your new business. If you want to be successful, you’ll need to be willing to work long hours for little pay in the beginning.

2 Do I have support?

You can’t be successful in business without a support system. If you have a family, it’s crucial that your spouse or any other family member if you are not married yet be on board with the business plans. You will most likely experience a drop in income for awhile, and you’ll be working long hours in the beginning. Is your spouse or parents willing to support you through the difficult start-up period?

If you’re not married, do you have another support system? Having friends, family or mentors to cheer you on is very helpful when it comes to success.

3 Do I have the financial means to start and run a business?

Ideally, you’ll have a nice nest egg tucked away before starting a business. In addition to start-up costs, it will take awhile for your business to become profitable and you may have several months without a paycheck. You should have a minimum of 6 months living expenses in the bank before starting a business—12 months is even better.

4 Am I passionate about this business?

Passion is the thing that keeps you going when your business is struggling and you’re working 14-hour days. If you’re trying to open a business in an industry that doesn’t excite you, your odds of success are slim. Find something you can do that really fires you up.

5 Do I have the knowledge I need to get started?

Running a business is often a learn-as-you-go process, which is fine. But you do need to have some basic knowledge before you jump in to entrepreneurship. Do you have knowledge about the industry of your business? Do you have basic accounting, marketing, sales or managerial experience? While you don’t need a degree in any one thing, you might need a small amount of knowledge in everything.

1. Think of your career as a series of experiences.

The most optimistic and intelligent way to look at your career isn’t how long you stay with one employer or that you focus on what degree you have. You need to collect experiences throughout your careers, whether that is with two employers or four, with one business function or five or in one country or three. The idea is that you need to be a lifelong learner if you want to make an impact, succeed and feel accomplished. The experiences you have will expand your world view, give you new perspectives and make you a more interesting person.

2. Don’t settle for a job you’re not passionate about.

Chances are that you might get frustrated in your job search. 6 months are over and still you don’t have any job in your hand, this can happen. In such case, please don’t just get a job that will pay the bills. Note that some people will push you to take this decision. This isn’t the greatest advice because research shows that you won’t last long there if you do. Furthermore, no smart company is going to have someone who is only there to make money because there’s always someone else who wants it more. When you’re passionate about your job, you’re excited; you work longer hours and end up accomplishing much more. Life is too short to settle for a career that you hate!

3. Focus on making a big impact immediately.

The quicker you make an impact in a company the more attention and support you will get. Millennials understand this well because they won’t want to wait five years to get on a project where they can make this type of impact. Starting on day one, you have to learn as much as possible and start mastering your job so you can handle on to the bigger projects faster and prove yourself. By doing this, you will become more valuable in your company, which will increase your pay, title and you’ll get to work on better projects.

4. Take risks – Early and often in your career.

One of the important lessons this economy has taught us is that not taking risks is risky. There is so much out of our control and if we just keep doing what we did yesterday, we can’t get ahead. By taking a risk, you are putting yourself in a position to learn, whether you succeed or fail. You’re also showing to your management that you’re willing to put your reputation on the line to make things happen. As we become an ever more entrepreneurial society, those that take risks, both inside and outside of the corporate walls, will become more successful.

5. Spend more time with people than with your laptop.

Students are plugged in and don’t understand that the strongest relationship are formed in person, not online. I constantly see students looking down at their Smartphone’s instead of at people’s faces and it’s a missed opportunity. Soft skills will always become more cherished in companies so it’s important to drop your technology and actually communicate with people. People hire you, not technology and you have to remember that!

6. Measure your work outcomes and build case studies.

If you look at any student resume, they almost always look the same. They have the same fields (education, experience, school activities). Under their experience fields, they list a company and then general information such as “Managed XXX project”. They dress up their experience bullets so they can turn menial tasks into something more marketable. The problem is that recruiters today, and especially in the future, are looking for outcomes. They want to know the numeric impact you’re having on a company through your work, which means increasing revenue or decreasing costs. Always think about measuring your projects and keeping track of the results because that’s what’s going to help you justify promotions.

7. Sacrifice today to position yourself for tomorrow.

You can’t have everything you want today so you need to work hard to put yourself in a better position in the future. Try to put in over more hours per week working on something you loved. As a result, if future you have the freedom to do what you want, when you want. While others would have used that same time to go out every night and party, you will be creating solid foundation for your successful career and I am sure you can! The more you do early in your career, the more it will pay off later in life and you will be thankful that you did what needed to be done in those early years.

8. Travel as much as you can, while learning about cultures and languages. 

We live in a global marketplace now and companies are looking to expand and hire the best talent, regardless of location. If your career offers you the opportunity to explore new places do take advantage of the same. The more you travel and experience the world, the better you will be at serving this marketplace and taking advantage of it. Furthermore, if you’re learning new languages, you are ahead of the curve. It’s hard for companies to find workers who are fluent in languages so if that’s you, you become more marketable. Please note that it is not at all necessary that travelling means going abroad. It can be moving out of your home town and might be your state and working somewhere else in the same country.

9. Locate mentors who live your desired lifestyle. 

Mentor is an experienced and trusted adviser. Most students aren’t selective about mentors and just feel fortunate to have them in the first place. I believe you need to choose the right mentor, who you can support and who has time to support you. That person should be someone in your industry who is living the lifestyle that you dream of. This way, they can tell you exactly what you need to do each day to get to their level. For instance, if you want to travel and do consulting in the future then find someone who has a job at Deloitte or Accenture to mentor you. Based on your meetings with them, you might even decide that the consulting lifestyle isn’t a good match for you after all.

In July 2014 the Indian E-commerce sector was in joyous mood. Amazon.com said it will invest a further $2 billion in India just a day after the country’s largest e-tailer Flipkart attracted $1 billion of fresh funds, raising the stakes in a nascent but fast-growing e-commerce sector.

India’s e-commerce market grew at a staggering 88 per cent in 2013 to $16 billion, riding on booming online retail trends and defying slower economic growth and spiralling inflation, according to a survey by industry body ASSOCHAM. It is a rapidly expanding sector, throwing up thousands of new job opportunities every year.

E-commerce Hotspot for Career Opportunities

Ashu Malhotra, senior VP-HR, Jabong.com informs that the e-commerce industry has grown by leaps and bounds in the past few years. “As per a CRISIL research report, e-commerce in India is estimated to grow at 50-55 per cent annually for the next three years and is touted to become an Rs 50,000crore industry by 2016, “he shares. The e-commerce industry is growing significantly in India and expected to add tons of jobs in the years to come, asserts Vinish Kathuria, COO, Digital Quotient.“Owing to the rapidly changing consumer behaviour and shopping patterns, one can expect a continued growth in the coming years, “he explains.

The job market in this relatively new industry seems to be flourishing like no other industry. Sharing his views on the employment scenario in his industry, Rajiv Srivatsa, COO and co-founder, Urban Ladder says, “There are plenty of opportunities available because the industry is young and evolving continuously. Profiles and job descriptions that never existed have been created specifically for this industry and people are getting a chance to innovate and explore new opportunities since there aren’t any set rules and there is a lot of learn ing along the way. ” Kathuria adds, “This is an ideal industry for people who are fast-paced, fuelled by passion, highly creative and for who comfort is not a priority. I believe for creative-enthusiasts and geeks, it is fascinating to work in ecommerce. Moreover, there is a positive growth outlook for this sector. ” According to Malhotra, hiring activities are expected to grow by over 30 per cent in this sector and may help create upto 50,000 employment opportunities in the next two-three years. “Tier-1 B.Tech and MBA grads mostly join us from IITs and IIMs. As per a study by Nielsen, today, almost one-fourth of MBA students from across India’s top tier business schools, including the IIMs, said they would prefer working for the fledgling e-commerce sector, over traditional favourites like consulting and financial services jobs,” he shares.

Further discussing the kind of career prospects and opportunities professionals can look at in this industry, and the hottest jobs available, Aloke Bajpai, CEO and co-founder, ixigo.com avers, “The ecommerce industry is currently witnessing an upsurge in growth and this is the right time for aspiring individuals to turn to this industry. While there is always a demand for solid web/app developers and quality experts; content writers, graphic designers and digital marketers also have a huge role to play. ” The industry is growing at a rapid pace. And this means that the growth opportunities in this industry would be ample too. Srivatsa points out, “Most of successful e-commerce companies have started out as small three-four member teams, but have grown into 1000+ member organisations today. This has given a lot of employees the exposure and growth they would have found impossible to achieve in more established companies where hierarchy and experience take precedence over talent. ” Kathuria concurs, “E-commerce offers a dynamic work environment. It exposes a professional to all the powerful core essentials of a business functioning like product marketing, supply chain, pricing and profit management, customer acquisition, cross-selling, up-selling, customer service and much more.

Not many jobs present that holistic picture. Globally, the sector is booming and is expected to grow to $675 billion by 2016. ” Moreover, not only does the e-commerce industry have the hottest jobs in present times, but also the coolest work environment. Bajpai asserts that e-commerce companies typically exhibit an informal working culture, with lower levels of hierarchy in comparison to traditional industries and MNCs. “Ecommerce is a fast-paced industry, which rewards those companies that are able to rapidly pivot to exploit changing trends. Thus, prospective candidates must display great communication skills, flexibility and enthusiasm for the constant innovativeness that is required in this industry,” he explains.

About 1.5 lakh jobs are expected to be created in the digital marketing space within a couple of years as more companies tap the Internet and the social media platform to bolster business, say HR experts.
