Another Academic year filled with excitement, hard work, anxiety, pressure and determination has come to an end and it’s time for aspiring engineers to reap the benefits that they have put into their cause. Although the next agenda for engineering applicants is to clear the entrance exams with flying colours, so that it increases their chances of seeking admissions in to reputed Institutes like the Indian Institute of Technology or IIT’s or the Indian Institute of Information Technology or popularly known as IIIT’s and in their interested course. In hope that their career prospects will be good, is probably the main reason for individuals to perform well both in academics as well as the entrances.

Popular courses in engineeringWhile all this seems to be well planned it doesn’t give you the assurance that you will get the course that interests you because there are lots of factors that are involved. Right from the number of seats available in the institute, to the cut off marks, meeting the eligibility criteria, the number of applicant’s competing for the same course as you so on and so forth. In view of these aspects, gathering information about courses that aren’t so popular just might be the right way to go if you have all the necessary information to make an informed decision. Therefore answering questions like How to choose a college?, How to make career decisions? Or for that matter what are the Career prospects in the field of Engineering? Or what kinds of Job Opportunities are available in the market? Or What the Job Profile of a Civil Engineer is like? Are questions that most people tend to over look because their focus is mainly on the present instead of a long term bases. Therefore gathering information is so important, especially because the cooperate world is constantly changing due to the rapid development in technology.

Nonetheless, the most popular courses that aspiring Engineers tend to opt for are Computer Science, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Civil or Environment Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aeronautical or Aerospace, Aircraft Maintenance, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Biotechnology. Nevertheless the options available to Engineering aspirants are plenty. Of the many course available, some of the “core branches” of Engineering are Chemical, Mechanical, Civil and Electrical Engineering. Apart from these some of the popular engineering streams are Aeronautical or Aerospace, Aircraft Maintenance, Computer Science, Electronics and Communication, Electrical and Electronics, Bio-Medical, Electronics and Telecommunication, Civil or Environmental, Chemical, Industrial and Production, Metallurgical and Materials, Automobile, Manufacturing, Instrumentation, Marine, Mining, Metallurgical, Agricultural, Biotechnology, Applied Engineering Science, Textile, Polymer and Information Technology, Petroleum Engineering.

Computer Science offers fresh graduate’s tremendous job opportunities in the I.T. sector. The career opportunities require engineers with analytical abilities. Aspiring candidates should have a strong base in basic programming languages like java, mathematics and basic semiconductor physics. Candidates who are passionate about database management and application development are perfect for this stream.

Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering or Environmental Engineering deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment such as roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings. These individuals usually work contractor ship or can work for any construction company or as builders. Therefore individual’s with good skills in mathematics (geometry) and physics (mechanics), chemistry and material sciences. Engineering aspirants who are good at geographic technology can also do well in this field. Civil engineers can also work in technical institutes as a lecturer for the branch of Civil Engineering they also have scope in construction engineer, hydraulic engineer or even a coastal engineer.

Chemical engineering is meant for those students who are interested in developing bio-fuels, modeling new ores or even devices. These students should have a strong base in organic or inorganic chemistry. Apart from these skills even the basics of mathematics and physics are important. Chemical engineers are chiefly involved in the renewable energy sector, nuclear power sector, and industrial metallurgy sector. Ensuring safety and control for all the manufacturing plants is another important responsibility.

Aeronautical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering is the primary branch of engineering concerned with the design, construction, and science of aircraft and spacecraft. An Aeronautical Engineer basically deals with aircrafts, rockets, flying crafts and space craft. It is divided into two major and overlapping branches: Aeronautical engineering and Astronautical engineering. The former deals with craft that stay within Earth’s atmosphere, and the latter with craft that operates outside it

An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) in India is a person specifically licensed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Government of India, to certify the airworthiness of an aircraft, power plant, aircraft system or component after maintenance. Any aircraft engaged in public transport including aerial work and flying training shall not be flown unless it has been maintained in accordance with such requirements as may be specified by the Director-General; and all such maintenance has been certified by appropriately licensed engineers, approved or authorized persons by means of such a ‘certificate’ as may be prescribed by the Director-General (Wikipedia).

The Mechanical Engineering discipline applies the principles of physics and material sciences for the analysis, design, manufacturing and maintenance of mechanical systems. It deals with the production and usage of heat and mechanical power for the design, production and operation of machines and tools. A mechanical engineer can enter in to chemical, manufacturing units, oil refineries, defense sector, and automobile sector. Mechanical engineer can seek employment in the government sector where companies like BHEL and ISRO recruit graduates.

Electronics Engineering or Electrical Engineering is another popular choice. It is a discipline where non-linear and active electrical components such as electron tubes, and semiconductor devices, especially transistors, diodes and integrated circuits, are utilized to design electronic circuits, devices and systems, typically include passive electrical components and based on printed circuit boards. The term denotes a broad engineering field that covers important subfields such as analog electronics, digital electronics, consumer electronics, embedded systems and power electronics. Electronics engineers deals with implementation of applications, principles and algorithms developed within many related fields, such as solid-state physics, radio engineering, telecommunications, control systems, signal processing, systems engineering, computer engineering, instrumentation engineering, electric power control, robotics, and many others. Students with a strong base in calculus, probability theory and physics (optics, electro-magnetics and semiconductor) can perform well in this area (Wikipedia).

Given the wide array of opportunities available to students even in the Engineering field, knowing one’s interest and abilities play an important role in the individual’s success so before deciding on a stream it is essential to gather all the information that is required. So if you are looking for more information about these courses you can visit our sister website www.way2k.com and to get an idea about the information that is required you can visit our website www.careerfutura.com.

Biotechnology is a comparatively new course and quite similar to Chemical Engineering. This course deals with mass transfer and fluid mechanics. Subjects like chemistry, biology and physics are fundamental to this stream therefore these subjects need to be strong to excel in this stream. The biotech inventions are widely use in agriculture and allied sectors, health and sanitation, environment and biodiversity conservation, dairy and fisheries, integrated farming and pharmaceutical industry.
