The records maintained by an Archivist can be in any form of media. As a storehouse of knowledge, archives have to be preserved and audited at regular period of time. The unique and valuable history can be understood in a better way in context to the modern world through archives. Archivist holds an important role in interpreting the past records, exploit the archival heritage and convey the right information preserved by them to the world. Mainly an Archivist repairs, conserves, rehabilitates, handles and stores, the heritages scientifically.

  • Estimates and modifies permanent records, actively participates in research activities related to archival materials, and manage safekeeping of archival documents and materials like government records, letters from famous persons, minutes of corporate board meetings, and charters of nonprofit foundations, by determining the date of writing, author, or original recipient of letter, to assess the value to posterity or to employing organization.
  • Equips document descriptions and reference aids that are use by archives, as accession lists, indexes, guides, bibliographies, microfilmed copies of documents and abstracts.
  • Maintains ordering and cross indexing by alphabetical and chronological order of most selected documents
  • Looks after pertinent materials available in private collections, libraries, or other archives.
  • Single out and modify documents for publication and display, as per the knowledge of subject, literary or journalistic expression, and techniques for presentation and display.

Current Job Scenario

Archivists are paid based on the nature of the work. An Archivist is paid between Rs. 6000 to Rs. 8000 PM. After completing a masters and gaining some experience one can opt for a PhD program and get into research.
