Reporter acts as a mediator between the Reader and events. Reporting is concerned with collection and reporting of events through different forms such as, the print media, the electronic media and the web media. This includes different areas of work like coverage, script, editing, photography, broadcasting, documentary etc. Journalism is classified into three parts on the basis of media:

Job Profile

  1. Print Journalism: It is the traditional form of journalism which includes newspaper, magazines and journals. In this media one can work as editor, reporter, columnist, correspondent, etc. They effectively research and gather information along with thinking critically and analytically.
  2. Electronic Journalism: It includes working for radio, television. In electronic journalism one can be a reporter, writer, editor, researcher, correspondent and anchor. Reporting for television involves for more leg work than print. It also requires closer co-operation with cameraman and therefore it helps to know a little bit of camera work and lighting. The reporting section of a television news channel is headed by a news coordinator who has a staff of several seniors and junior reporters functioning under them.

Current Job Profile

  • As against print journalism television is known to pay better. As a trainee in a newspaper your pay ranges around Rs 5000 – 8000 per month, which may be hiked to Rs 10000-12000 on confirmation. As a reporter/journalist in the beginning, you can expect to make Rs.10000 – Rs.15000.
  • In the electronic media, as a journalist you can start out with Rs 8000 as minimum pay. If you are extraordinary knowledgeable, you can even start with Rs. 15000 with an electronic media company. However, salary scales aren’t fixed in this field. And you can earn quite well after 4-5 years.
