Mathematics is as old as the civilization and is one of the most useful and fascinating branches of human knowledge. It includes many topics which are difficult to define.  The term “mathematics” which comes from a Greek word meaning “urge to learn”. It may, however, be broadly defined as the scientific study of quantities, including their relationships, operations and measurements expressed by numbers and symbols. In simple words, mathematics deals with study of numbers and their various calculations. The most important skills in mathematics are careful analysis and reasoning, and thus logic is the base for mathematics.

Mathematics is used by all individuals in everyday life. In science, mathematics is an essential tool for nearly all scientific studies. Scientists use in it designing experiments, analyzing data, expressing precisely their findings by mathematical formulas, and making predictions on the basis of these findings. Physical sciences Such as astronomy, chemistry, and physics rely heavily on mathematics. Social sciences, economics, psychology, and sociology also depend greatly on statistics and several other branches of mathematics. Economists (notably econometricians) use computers to create mathematical models (or econometric models) of the economic systems.

Almost every sector needs mathematics to function and perform. Hence, having the knowledge of mathematics in itself is a greater scope and opportunity. Further it is bifurcated into branches such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, trigonometry etc.  Arithmetic deals with quantities expressed in numbers; algebra uses quantities and relationships expressed in symbols. Geometry deals with quantities associated with space, length, area, figures in space etc. Calculus deals with pairs of associated quantities. Trigonometry concerns relationships of angles and analytical geometry applies algebra to geometric studies.

Operations Research – Operations research (OR) is a scientific approach to analyzing problems and making decisions.  Much of this work is done using analytical and numerical techniques to develop and manipulate mathematical and computer models of organizational systems. To work in OR, you typically obtain a bachelors degree in mathematics, followed by a Masters in OR.

  • Applied Mathematics  – If you want to work in an industrial setting, you might consider applied mathematics
  • Mathematical Biology, Bioinformatics – Today’s fastest growing fields are where mathematics, computer science, and biology or medicine intersects. Mathematical biology uses mathematics to build models of biological systems.  These models are then used to address questions that may be difficult or impossible to address otherwise.
  • Teaching – School mathematics teachers are in high demand, and graduates will be successful in obtaining teaching positions.  Achieving a Masters degree in mathematics or mathematics education will enable you to teach at many colleges, while a Ph.D. will prepare you to teach at the University level.
  • Research Mathematician – Research Mathematicians obtain jobs in academics and are also employed by large companies such as Microsoft and Bell Labs.  They work on independent research and those in academics typically also teach.
