Sea is the widest and oldest mode of Transportation across the world. However, globalization of the world economy has given a big boost to this ancient system of transportation of man and material known as Merchant Navy which is commercial aspect of shipping industry. In India, The Merchant Navy some time misunderstood with Navy i.e. the combatant forces of the country. However, both are different in terms of playing their vital roles, but both stay on seas, this is the only similarity between two of them.
A merchant navy career is full of adventure and long voyages to exotic and obscure places. Merchant navy fleet consist of cargo ships, container ships, barge carrying ships, tankers, bulk carriers, refrigerators ships, passenger ships, as well as roll off/roll on ships.

- When on contract job it is 12hours a day or continuous and when you are on leave you get get a minimum of 30days leave at a stretch.
Job Profile
The main functional areas where a Merchant Marine can pursue as a career are as follows:
- Deck / Navigation Officer Deck or navigation officer as the name suggest, are in charge of the navigation of the ship. The Captain or Master is in command of the ship. He is the most responsible person when it comes the navigation, discipline on the ship and the safety of passengers. He assigns organisational duties for ships operation, navigation and maintenance with the chief mate.
- Engineering Officers The ships engineers are responsible for the ships engine room like the main engine, boilers, pumps hydraulic and fuel systems and the ships electrical generating plant and distribution system.
- Stewards/Service department This department is responsible for preparing of food and meals for the crew on board. They also maintain living quarters of the crew and the mess halls. The chief steward maintains inventories of food stuffs, linen, bedding, furniture, etc. The other staffs are the chief cook, baker and attendants.
