With the examinations fast approaching, most students are preparing themselves for another round of examinations. Most students opting for last minute study are usually either looking for notes, verifying the syllabus, shifting through topics, searching for easy topics, or looking for ways to reduce the portion by going through previous years question papers. Well if you are still following this method it is high time you stop it or you won’t learn anything.

Besides just passing isn’t enough you need to know something about your subject if at all you wish to be employed. And if you are listening to friends who say that they are doing the same, they are probably lying to you. So don’t be gullible like some are, have some common sense or better yet be realistic in your approach, especially when studies are concerned and your future is in question.

In case you’re wondering how to study for Engineering Exams? Then here are some useful tips that can help you memorise and learn the material well:

Note Making and Note Taking

While attending classes you need to make a note of only the important points but focus more on listening to what is being taught. While studying making notes helps a great deal. When making notes you can either use stick – ons or prepare notes in the text itself. It is preferable to make notes or place stick ons beside the topic studied. After reading a paragraph make a note of all the points discussed.

Use Mnemonics

Mnemonics are clues that help individuals to associate the information they want to remember via images, sentences and words. These have proved to be effective in remembering things.

Highlighting important points

Some students prefer to underline important points in pencil while others prefer to use highlighting markers for the points that seem important to them. By highlighting the important points, you save time kept for revising.

List out the Points

Apart from highlighting the points you can also list out the points that you feel or think are important on a separate piece of paper or in your study notes.

Prepare Drawings or Diagrams

If possible prepare drawings that highlight the main points discussed in the topic. Once you have listed out the points you can even form a hierarchy based on the important points. For topics that discuss a process of things it is preferable to create a diagram that shows the different processes, or if there isn’t one. Nevertheless it is preferable to refer to the diagrams that are there in the text itself. This works best for when your have diagrams to remember.

Flow Charts

Applicants can also use flow charts to highlight the various processes involved. Ensure that you learn these diagrams as a simple picture can give a fair explanation of the topic thus it helps in remembering the material better.

Prepare Charts

For subjects like Mathematics, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Physics and Chemistry that have formulas or chemical compositions to remember. Preparing charts is the best way to remember such material. But if one wishes to remember formulas preparing a chart with the formulas that you need to remember will save time when you have to revise the formulas alone.

Repetition

Several psychological studies that were conducted highlighted the fact that repetition is the best and the only way to learn and memorise the matter that needs to be remembered well. By revising the matter on a regular basis it ensures that the topic is learnt and remembered. Thus enabling students to recall the learnt matter when needed.

Have a plan and time yourself

You can also prepare a calendar and a time table to allot time to different subjects. If you are solving previous years question papers then your need to create an examination environment and even reserve time for each question based on the marks.

Practice

For subjects that require Arithmetic calculations like Mathematics, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Physics and Chemistry the best way to prepare is to practice, practice and then practice some more. But before you solve question papers it is preferable to finish and master the problems given in the reference book. You can also practice solving problems from question papers and even solved examples. Therefore, “Practice as if you are the worst, perform as if you are the best” – Jaspher Kantuna.

Health Matters

Ensure that you eat a balanced diet, sleep adequately and exercise as all of these aspects together affect your performance irrespective of the points discussed so far.

By implementing these simple tips right at the start of term, you are bound to perform well thus improving your chances of being employed and increasing your chances of obtaining a seat in the desired college and in the interested course of your choice.

The KSET is conducted by the University of Mysore for determining the eligibility for Lectureship (Assistant Professorship) in various universities / colleges / Institutions (Government / Aided / Private) in Karnataka State. Given the difficulty of the entrance there are several tips that can assist applicants in their preparation. Since there are 32 subjects the preparation differs according to the nature of the subject, hence here are 7 tips to crack the KSET easily.

Tip1: Pay attention to your health

For your brain to function at its optimum level, it is important for one to eat a nutritious diet, exercise the entire body especially in the morning and sleep sufficiently. Exercise refreshes not only the body but also the mind. All these aspects together affect your attention span and play a vital role in your ability to learn new information.

Tip 2: Use memory improvement techniques such as Mnemonics

Several studies have been conducted to test the effectiveness of the use or Mnemonics. The findings suggest that using mnemonics while studying helps the information to get registered faster and in a fun way. Some examples of mnemonics are acronyms, rhymes, acoustic, method of Loci etc. Each mnemonic can aid memorization of different study material hence the types have been derived.

Tip 3: Preparation for Languages

The best way to prepare for languages is by reading material in the different languages. This activity helps to understand passages of comprehension better and also helps students to write essays. For English it is preferable to refer to Wren & Martin. This book is a perfect guide for improving your grammar, essay writing skills as well as your comprehension skills because it has exercises and examples for each topic. If possible ensure that you have a copy of the ‘key’ to verify the answers to the exercises given in the same. A word of caution don’t look at the answers directly as you will be cheating yourself and you will not learn anything nor will you improve you command over the language which is essential in today’s day and age.

Tip 4: Refer and Solve previous years question papers

To get an idea about the paper and the type of questions asked you need to not only refer to previous years question papers but also solve them. This activity will help you to identify which topics or chapters are important and the distribution of marks for the important topics will also be highlighted nonetheless. Solving question papers with an examination setting will increase the speed of answering the questions.

Tip 5: Practice

For subjects that require Arithmetic calculations like Mathematics, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Physics and Chemistry the best way to prepare is to practice, practice and then practice some more. But before you solve question papers it is preferable to finish and master the problems given in the reference book and you can practice solving the problems in the question papers. Therefore, “practice as if you are the worst, but perform as if you are the best”.

Tip 6: Develop a Plan

It is important to allot time to different subjects so that you can study better. Topics that are difficult to comprehend require more time in comparison to topics that are easy to understand. You may have a list of things to do but in order to get all the work done in time, it requires planning. Creating a time-table ensures that all the tasks are done and results in more topics being covered in minimum amount of time.

Tip 7: Avoid Procrastination

It is absolutely necessary that you don’t put off tasks that need to be completed. If you are putting off tasks due to their difficulty level, you need to stop that as it is not going to help in any which ways. But they forget that although these topics seem difficult now; but once understood are easy, more fun and most likely easy to score in too.

By following these simple tips to crack the KSET you are likely to perform well thus cracking the KSET will be relatively easier. For more information about KSET visit our sister website www.way2k.com.

Of the many management entrances, one such entrance exam is the Joint Entrance Management Aptitude Test (JEMAT) that is conducted by the West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT) for admission to various M.B.A. and M.C.A. courses as well.

This kind of comprehensive test assists the concerned college authorities to evaluate a candidate’s business aptitude and other life skills which are necessary for manager and business executives. The JEMAT exam is conducted in 2 phases the former being an Aptitude test and the latter one consists of a Group Discussion or GD and a Personal Interview or a PI. Once the written exam comprising of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) is cleared thereafter the candidate has to go through a GD PI round upon clearing the two the applicant is given a nod by the institute, they can then proceed to the admission procedure.

The written exam assesses the applicants on 3 parameters namely English, Mathematics and Logical Reasoning. With the exam round the corner most students look for tips that can help them crack the JEMAT. Given the need of the hour, here are some tips to crack the JEMAT Examination.

Tip 1: English

This section assess the applicants command over the English language hence the grammar and comprehension skills are also assessed. The questions are based on analogies, synonyms and antonyms, match the list, idioms, one word for many, fill in the blanks and identify the various Figures of Speech.

Grammar: A useful tool to improve your language skills is by referring to Wren & Martin. This book is a perfect guide for improving your grammar, essay writing skills as well as your comprehension skills because it has exercises and examples for each topic. It also comes with a key that you can use to verify if your answers are correct.

Reading and Comprehension: The Wren & Martin has very good examples for improving your comprehension skills as well. It has sample passages that contain questions on most of the aspects covered in the English section.

Expose yourself to the language: You can start by making use of the various resources available to you such as the Internet, newspapers, journals, magazines, television, books etc. Most importantly converse with a friend who is good at the language if possible, it is the most effective way to increase your confidence.

Improve your English: It is absolutely essential for students to make a habit of reading as this is one of the best ways to improve your language skills. Reading English newspapers, listening to English news and writing a few sentences in English will definitely help you in the long run. When you read; it not only helps you to improve your grammar but also increases your vocabulary.

Watch Television in English

Maintain a Note book

Watch English Movies with English Soundtracks and English Subtitles

Maintain a Diary

Read English Newspapers

Keep a Dictionary Beside you at all times

Read English Books

Use a Thesaurus to Improve your Vocabulary

Listen to English music and sing along

Do Not Hesitate

Practice the 4 core skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking)

Improve your Grammar

Improve your Vocabulary: When you come across a word that you do not understand make it a point to open a dictionary and a thesaurus therefore ensure that you have a dictionary as well as a thesaurus nearby whenever you read something. In any form either in print, on line or software. Then make sure you -

Note Down the Words or Phrases used with their meanings:

Try to use the word in a sentence the same day

Look for the Prefixes (un, in) and Suffixes (al, ion, ness)

Explore the verb, noun, adjective or adverb forms

Find Antonyms and Synonyms with a thesaurus

Pay attention to the pronunciations of words given beside the word

Access an on line dictionary to hear the pronunciation of the word from the speakers

Tip 2: Logical Ability

When a problem is given don’t just solve it try to analyze it for 20 to 30 minutes by asking your W/H questions such as Why, What, When Where and How.

Tip 3: Analytical Reasoning & Decision Making

The reasoning section consists of questions based on logical, analytical and critical reasoning therefore they are framed accordingly. So whenever you read a passage don’t forget to put on your thinking cap and ask your W/ H questions as often as possible. Students need to practice difficult reasoning puzzles from mock papers and books on reasoning. Solving puzzles from popular puzzle books available in bookstores will also help. Focus on lengthy puzzles on distribution involving lots of variables. The section on Decision Making can be best practiced by going through the mock JEMAT papers.

Tip 4: Data Interpretation

This section mainly consists of questions that use bar graphs, line graphs, case lets (data given in the form of paragraphs requires applicants to extract the information provided to establish a relationship between the data given), tables, pie charts or circle graphs etc. to interpret data. Similarly the questions are based on the data that is interpreted, so break up the question and note down the information that is given to you.

Tip 5: Mathematics

The Key to doing well in mathematics is by practicing as much as you can. You need to understand the concepts well, before you start solving problems. Rather than mugging the formulas it is preferable to understand the concepts and get them cleared. If you have a thorough knowledge of the concepts, you will be able to solve any problem that may come your way. It is essential that you are thorough with concepts of:

Force, Momentum

Calculus and its application

Matrices

Trigonometry

Shares and Dividends

Properties of Logarithms

Equation of circle

Parabola

Ellipse

Conditional probability etc. as these types of questions are most likely to come.

Know the formulas on the tip of your fingers

Mental calculations should also be strong so that you can come up with your own short cuts. These are important skills as you will definitely benefit from it.

When practicing, “Practice as if you are the worst; perform as if you are the best.” - Jaspher Kantuna.

Tip 6: Group Discussions

Try to be loud and aggressive in an appropriate manner, if you need to get your point across. If unclear about the topic wait for someone else to begin. Try and summarize the points that have been discussed at regular intervals.

Tip 7: Practice

It is essential that students refer to previous years question papers and rely on mock tests, as this will familiarise them with the paper pattern thus, giving them an idea about the type of questions asked. Hence, students are better prepared for the examination.

Tip 8: Join Coaching classes: this will ensure that students practice regularly and ensure that they are better prepared because they can resolve their queries about a particular topic.

Tip 9: Health Matters: it is important to ensure that you get enough rest, eat a balanced diet and most importantly exercise. It is important that you sleep on time, eat properly and exercise; if you wish to perform well in the examinations because both the body and the mind need to rest in order to function to its optimum level.
