Most management aspirant’s goal is to become effective managers. The typical job profile of a manager involves dealing with people on a regular basis for various tasks. These tasks comprise of being able to get your point across, ensuring that the work gets done in time and as expected, create a compelling presentation to support your goals, come up with unique ideas, decision making and problem solving and to inspire employees to achieve better results by demonstrating emotional intelligence.

Developing Effective Management Skill SetsIndividuals find it difficult to achieve this goal or if they have achieved the position they find it difficult to perform effectively. This is mostly because all the necessary skills aren’t at their disposal to succeed. To assist such individuals it is essential to make them aware of the skills that are required hence in this article we will be addressing the importance of possessing Management skills such as creativity, effective communication, decision making, problem solving, perceptiveness, persuasion, monitoring, operational analysis, time management, adapt, flexible, coordinating, language skills, delegating, managing finances and the equipment.

  1. Creativity: these individuals need to be creative in order to come up with new and innovative ideas for the launch of a product. Having some measure of creativity can assist these individuals to either give suggestions to their employees to improve the product or to come up with new ways and means to advertise the product.

  1. Effective Communication: when we talk about communication we are referring to both types verbal and non – verbal cues. It is essential for individuals to communicate their views effectively to limit the cases of miscommunication and to be aware of their non – verbal cues. Because both these aspects play a role in the quality of work delivered. The best way to do this is by being an active listener instead of a passive one as this reduces the problems from arising. This is an important skill because of the tasks involved. Also merely being creative and not able to communicate those views isn’t productive for ones success, nor is conveying the wrong message to the clients productive either. Therefore, it is absolutely essential for individuals to be able to communicate the correct information to clients.

  1. Decision Making: individuals should be able to make a fair judgement of things based on the information available. It includes arriving at solutions that work best for the majority. Apart from this individuals are required to make careful judgements about the costs and benefits that are involved.

  1. Problem Solving: although creativity is essential it is important in problem solving because individuals need to be able to look at things from all possible angles to come up with an effective solution. Problem solving requires both critical thinking as well as complex problem solving. Critical thinking includes the use of logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the alternative solutions derived and the various conclusions or approaches to a problem. Complex problem solving involves the individual’s ability to identify, review all related information and to evaluate the options in order to implement solutions effectively.

  1. Perceptiveness: it requires individuals to be aware of the reactions of people and the ability to identify the reasons for the reactions displayed as this will give the individual important information that they can use to their advantage.

  1. Persuasion: it is a skill that is of uttermost importance especially when meeting clients. This skill isn’t found in all individuals but it definitely affects the progress of one’s business. Individuals are expected to try and convince clients to either change their mind or behaviour about a product.

  1. Monitoring: along with perceptiveness, it is essential for individuals to assess themselves as well as others or the company to ensure that the work is completed on time with the necessary improvements and to highlight the mistakes.

  1. Operational Analysis: is another skill that has its own advantages. Here the individual is expected to analyze the needs and the product requirements to design it efficiently.

  1. Time Management: Apart from the skills mentioned being able to manage time effectively is equally important. One needs to be able to manage their time effectively first before they can manage the time of others.

  1. Adapt to the environment: since the work deals with people being able to adapt to the person in front of you is a valid asset as your views can be communicated effectively if done in the language that the person understands.

  1. Flexible: it is essential that individuals are flexible because they are expected to deal with different kinds of people. Since different individuals have their own way of doing things it is essential that these individuals are flexible by leaving the task to be done upon that individual.

  1. Coordination: this is an important skill mostly because individuals need to be able to work with other people and settle with their differences. The key to effective co – ordinations is adjusting with each other.

  1. Language Skills: it is absolutely essential that individuals have a good command over the English language, as most of the business transactions taken place are conducted in English. Therefore your verbal and written skills need to be good. As the work also involves marketing a product via social media and it usually involves writing, keeping in mind the target audience and their needs.

  1. Delegate: it is essential that individuals are able to delegate work because they are not expected to perform all the tasks that are given to them. They are expected to delegate the work that is given to the people under them so that they can pay more attention to tasks that are of importance.

  1. Effective Management of Finances: individuals tend to give less attention to the management of money because they find it trivial and unimportant, but this is not so. How well a business does has a bearing on the efficiency of the management of money and accounting of the expenses.

  1. Managing Materials and Resources efficiently: apart from managing finances another aspect that comes to the fore is how the equipment and resources are used. If these two things are managed well and used efficiently it reduces the problems arising and the finances are managed well.

Individuals should identify the skills that they lack and try to work on improving these management skills if they wish to succeed in the management field. If individuals rectify the skills that they require they will then do well as all these management skills are necessary if one wishes to succeed in the management field.
