Dental Laboratory Technician

A Dental Technologist is a member of the dental team who gives prescriptions as prescribed by a dental clinician, and constructs custom made restorative and dental appliances. There are four major disciplines within dental technology. These are fixed prosthesis including crowns, bridges and implants; removable prosthesis, including dentures and removable partial dentures; maxillofacial prosthesis, including ocular prosthesis and craniofacial prosthesis; and orthodontics and auxiliaries, including orthodontic appliances and mouth guards.

Job Profile

Dental Laboratory Technician:

  1. Read prescriptions or specifications and study models or impressions to examine the design of dental products to be constructed.
  2. Manufacture, alter, or repair dental devices, such as dentures, crowns, bridges, inlays, or appliances for straightening teeth.
  3. Remove excess metal or porcelain and polish surfaces of prostheses or frameworks, using polishing machines.
  4. Melt metals or mix plaster, porcelain, or acrylic pastes and pour materials into molds or over frameworks to form dental prostheses or apparatus.
  5. Test appliances for conformance to specifications and accuracy of occlusion, using articulators and micrometers.
  6. Apply porcelain paste or wax over prosthesis frameworks or setups, using brushes and spatulas.
  7. Place tooth models on apparatus that mimics bite and movement of patient’s jaw to evaluate functionality of model.
  8. Create a model of patient’s mouth by pouring plaster into a dental impression and allowing plaster to set.
  9. Train or supervise other dental technicians or dental laboratory bench workers.
  10. Build and shape wax teeth, using small hand instruments and information from observations or dentists’ specifications.

A dental lab technician’s salary varies on geographical location, experience. Dental lab technicians who become lab managers or become educators can make more. Those who become sales representatives, hold other positions like sales, research, and marketing in dental supplies and manufacturing companies, or operate their own laboratory can make some of the highest income. The salary ranges from Rs.6, 500 – 10,000 per month in hospitals and in clinics.
